Lake Colbún is an artificial reservoir built in the 1980s. Its original purpose was to hold the waters of the powerful Maule River and use them for hydroelectric generation. Over time, the area also developed tourism, sports, recreation and irrigation uses.
The lake covers about 5,700 hectares and can hold approximately 1.49 billion cubic meters of water, making it one of Chile’s largest artificial reservoirs.
