Cuyuname Wetland

In the rural sector of Cuyuname, south of Empedrado, Cuyuname Wetland forms part of a landscape where water, low-lying meadows and the fields of the coastal dryland come together. It is a place to slow down, observe the surroundings and appreciate the importance of wet areas in a territory shaped by long summers and a strong rural tradition.

Cuyuname also has a deep connection with local history. Historical sources place the former settlement of San José de Cuyuname in this sector, founded in 1782 and provided with religious and administrative organization before being affected by the 1835 earthquake. Over time, Empedrado took on a central role in the area, but the name Cuyuname remained closely linked to the memory of the territory.

Visiting the wetland combines nature and history in the same journey. It is a suitable stop for landscape observation, photography and discovering the municipality’s rural heritage. As in any natural environment, visitors should explore respectfully, avoid leaving waste and observe flora and fauna without disturbing their habitat.
